Challenges in Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary Medicine is a career that has a lot of challenges in different areas. For example, in public health, pharmacology, politics and in the creation of new investigation about animals and human. In the next lines I will detail the most important challenges in this discipline for me.

In public health a vet have several challenges in relation with grant to people a good health and a good environment to live. We the responsibility of watch for the welfare of the population. The challenge here is try to matein a good sanitary state to animals and human. To achieve this point, the vet has to know the principal zoonotic diseases and have knowledges of the public political. We have to explain to people how have a good possession of their pets and how they can prevent diseases like mange or ringworm.

In veterinary medicine we have a lot of drug that can be use in human but not in animals. We have to investigate in this area and create new and effectives drugs that can be useful in own area. For example aspirin is very good to the head pain in human but it can be toxic to animals like the cat.

Also like a vet we have a lot of challenges in politics because we have the duty to push government for found new laws about animal welfare and animal maltreat. To obtain this, we have to study more about the constitution of our country and have the faculty of draw up proposes that could be present in the parliament. The vet has to be ready to interfere in political. We can`t permit that animals be maltreat.

Another challenge is in investigation. We have to know more about the diseases that affect our animals and how we can fight with that. I think that the University of Chile, like a public institution, has to demand more recourses to the government to execute studies. In this way, we will have more tools and knowledges to give to animals a best treatment when they are sick. Also with the studies in the diseases of animals we can have a lot of benefits to human because we share many problems with animals like lupus, cancer or cardiologic diseases.

We can see that vet a much work to do yet, but nothing is impossible. Just we have to found the way to resolve and catch these challenges.

Red list 2009: Endangered species for every country in the world

The human be is responsible of the increase of the number of endangered species. This list of species on ranger of extinction had been going up because animals are losing their habitats. IUCN species programme compiled in a list all this animals and this is the best source of data that we have now.

Some people try to preserve this species with program of breeding in captivity and it`s work very good. The problem is that human still making things that damage the environment and consequently damage the species around the world.

Of all of this endangered species, 6% matches just to one country: Brazil. This can be explained with the deforestation in a zone with a great biodiversity.

Singapore that is a little island, have a lot of endangered species in spite of the small size that Singapore have. They have more endangered species in comparison with other places like USA.

In the TV exits some documentaries that help people to have conscience about what are happened in our planet and with the animals that live here. For example you have: Planet Earth and End of the Line. They try to teach that with just change the food that we eat, we can make the difference.

All people have to think about it if we have to help and save the animals that live with us in this world.

My Faculty

I`m studying veterinary medicine in the Faculty of Science Veterinaries and Livestock of the University of Chile. I think that is a great faculty but we have a lot of thing to improve.

In my opinion the actual situation is not so good because we have a new studying program and it isn`t so good at the moment. The problems of this program are:

- You have mixed subjects. For example, you have parasites and infectious in the same subject. The last year I had 3 or 4 notebooks.

- The new program supposed give us more time to do think like stay in our home or make electives and it isn`t true.

- The evaluation is not appropriated.

- Sometime the doctors teach you fewer contents that they have to pass us.

Another think that it´s not good is the infrastructure. For example, we don`t have a good play to do sports and we need better places to practice our profession. Also the bathrooms are disgusting.

I think that other think that could be better is the relationship between teachers and students. To me is not good that sometimes the teachers treat you like if you were anything.

The best way to improve all of these topics is start to be more auto critical. The program has to give us the tools to be good vets. I think that the program have to be revaluation. We can`t have mixed subject anymore or we will crazy in the end. Also we have to have more time to do things no related with the career so the university has to give us the opportunity and the time to do more electives.

To improve the infrastructure the authorities have to invest more money in our faculty. Maybe could be great if the faculty more people for clean and keep the order.

To finish is important that people who teach in the faculty could have a course of pedagogy. They have to learn how to try with the student and how to teach in a best way.

If all these things could come true, our faculty would be better.
